iHEAR: The UCF Program Helping Kids with Hearing Challenges Become Better Readers
In the iHEAR program, an experienced audiologist, a specially trained speech language pathologist and a team of student clinicians are working to prevent kids who are deaf and hard of hearing from falling behind in language development. Participants in iHEAR, which is offered through the UCF Health Communications Disorders Clinic, learn alongside other campers with typical hearing, but who are there to gain additional help with reading and language development. According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, hearing loss in children causes delays in the development of speech and language, which leads to learning problems that can result in reduced academic achievement, as well as social isolation and low self-confidence. Reading is particularly an area of difficulty for children with hearing loss, and the earlier a problem is identified and intervention begins, the less serious the ultimate impact. I came on here looking to see if this was a Judo club for UCF students because my son is applying here and does Judo. I didn't expect it to be a video about a Judo program for ASD adolescents. Coincidentally, my son is on the spectrum and discovered Judo and Jiu-Jitsu 2 1/2 years ago and it has been amazing for him. His sensory issues are significantly reduced (because of the constant sensory feedback during class), he is more grounded, needs to stim less, and has apparent and increased self-confidence and overall energy. He wants to continue at UCF but if they don't have it there for UCF students he will just continue at the gym where he goes now. His cousin took him to a trial Jiu-jitsu class initially and his response was immediate and so we signed him up for semi-private lessons with my partner, and then into the general adult classes at age 16. Every kid on the spectrum ought to have this opportunity. A national champion in Jiu-Jitsu is on the spectrum and his name is Mikey Mussemecci. Not sure I spelled that correctly. His sister, I believe, also is ASD, and is also a champion in Jiu-Jitsu. They're from South Florida.

    I’m so happy I watched this. I wanted to be a neuropsychologist but seen the pathway for it and then fell in love with speech and language pathology. THANK YOU for mentioning your minor in cognitive science because it will still be able for me to learn more about the brain.

    Hey! Thanks for this useful video. By the way, I hear a lot of people keep on talking about Stutterolax Secrets (search on google), but I'm not sure if it is really good. Have you ever tried program called Stutterolax Secrets? I have heard many great things about it and my work buddy completely end his speech stuttering naturally with this program.

    The main reason that speech pathology has grown as a field is the quickly growing amount of research re: neurophysiology and the interconnectedness of the brain. Speech pathologists also study anatomy and physiology of the larynx, brain, and oropharynx, so they have specialized and focused knowledge in these areas. As an SLP in an acute hospital setting, I can tell you that doctors and nurses consult us several times a day to assess, diagnose, and treat various disorders.

    You guys are all retarded!!! Speech language pathologist are needed everywhere!! A teacher isn't going to give a special education student all the attention needed when there is a class of 20 some students!! A nurse isn't going to help a patient only with speech problems when there is more things in the body to take care of!! A SLP is needed just like a physical therapist and occupational therapist!! THEY ALL WORK TOGETHER FOR THE NEEDS OF THE PATIENTS

    This is the most boring job! Your money is better spent on a Nursing Degree! If you end up not liking Nursing, you become a School Nurse or get teaching certification and become a Teacher. If you don't want schools, you go into Insurance and Medical Claims, Coding or Health Administration. If you don't like that, you can do home health. If you get a degree in Speech and you realize how boring and pointless it is, there is nowhere else to go but Back to COLLEGE! A POINTLESS BULLSHIT JOB!

  • @appolonia78
    @appolonia78 12 років тому

    And now they have figured out a way to require and demand more school, more college to get a Master's Degree... All about the money! Amazing how this job first started out and now what it has become - BULLSHIT! Question?? I wonder with all the job duties SLP's have today, who was doing them in the 1950's and 60's?? Who was helping patients regain their ability to feed?? NURSES! Who was helping kids with their R sounds and language vocabulary? TEACHERS! Who needs SLP's? WHAT A JOKE!

  • @appolonia78

    What a CROCK OF SHIT!!! Just some career that was invented out of thin air! It first began decades ago as a bachelor's degree job that improved Articulation and Accent Reduction... Then later they figured out a way to include Language Impairment ranging from ESL kids to low socioeconomic kids. They also stretched it further to include working with Pragmatics and social skills teaching Autistic and Mentally Retarded kids to act appropriate during conversation... Now stroke patients!
